Mr. McCann grew up as a military dependent. He attended elementary schools in Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Germany, and Japan. He will tell you that at the time, they were difficult transitions to make, but as an adult he looks back on the many wonderful experiences that have enhance his journey through life. He has been a resident of Lawton-Fort Sill community for forty-five years.
Mr. McCann and his wife, Susan, have been happily married for more than 37 years. They have two children and four beautiful grandchildren. Mrs. McCann is currently the principal of Brockland Elementary School in Lawton. She is completing her sixteenth year as an elementary principal.
Mr. and Mrs. McCann enjoy being active in the Logos program for school-aged children at Centenary United Methodist Church, spending time with their family and friends, attending youth sporting events, and especially, enjoying quality time with their four grandchildren. They BOTH agree sleepovers . . . are the BEST!
Mr. McCann graduated of Eisenhower High School in 1967. He attended and graduated from Cameron University in 1972, with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He continued his education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, receiving a Master’s degree in Elementary Education and Administration in 1985.
Mr. McCann has been an educator in the Lawton Public School District for 25 years. He taught Physical Education, taught 5th grade, and 6th grade students at Woodland Hills Elementary and Edison Elementary schools prior to moving into administration.
Mr. McCann served as an assistant principal at Country Club Heights Elementary School during the spring semester of the 1987-1988 school year. At the conclusion of the school year, he was moved to Sheridan Road Elementary School on Fort Sill to serve as the assistant principal during the 1988- 1989 school year. His final assignment, as an assistant principal, was at Douglass Learning Center during the 1989-1990 school year. Douglass received the Blue Ribbon Exemplary School award from the Department of Education during that year.
Mr. McCann was promoted to principal to serve Cleveland Elementary School during the 1990-1991 school year through the 1992-1993 school year. He requested a transfer to Douglass Learning Center and served the next four years as their principal. While at Douglass, Mr. McCann received the prestigious Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education State Superintendent’s Award. At the conclusion of the 1996-1997 school year, he requested a transfer to serve as the John Adams Elementary School principal for the next four years. In the fall of 2001, the district asked him to move to Woodland Hills Elementary School and served as their principal for the next five years through the 2005-2006 school year. Lawton Public Schools granted his request for transfer to Geronimo Road Elementary School for the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year. It has been his dream to be the principal of Geronimo Road throughout his administrative career with Lawton Public Schools.
Mr. McCann strongly believes all children have a natural need to explore, to reflect, to communicate, to dream, and to celebrate their successes in all areas of their education. He is eagerly looking forward to his tenure as the principal of Geronimo Road Elementary School on Ft. Sill.
